Getting to Bran Castle in Transylvania from Brașov

Bran Castle, also known as "Dracula's Castle", is a medieval fortress located in the heart of Transylvania. Famous for its association with the legend of Vlad the Impaler, the castle attracts thousands of visitors every year. Getting there from Brașov is easy: you can take a bus that will take you there in about 45 minutes or choose an organized tour. Join me on this Transylvanian adventure! 🧛

Bus

From Brașov to Bran

The cheapest way to get to Bran Castle from Brașov is definitely the public bus. Although I chose this option, I must admit that it is not the most comfortable, as it requires several changes and the information on timetables and stops is not always clear.

If you are in Brașov, the bus to Bran leaves from Autogara 2 Transbus Codreanu, located about 2.5 km from the city center. To get to the bus station, you can choose between several transportation options:

  • Local bus: Starting from the Livada Poștei stop, which is just outside the center, you can take bus 41, which, in about 15 minutes, will take you right in front of the bus station. The name of your stop is Autogara 2 (stadion).
Tips from Explorer's Tale
Tickets for local buses can be purchased from vending machines located at the main stops. Each ticket costs about 1.60 euros and allows for two trips. It is advisable to also buy the return ticket in advance, as I did not find any machines available for purchase at Autogara 2.
  • Taxi/Uber: You can use Taxi or services like Uber to get to the bus station. This is the fastest but also the most expensive option.
  • On foot: About 30/35 minutes from the center but I don't recommend it unless you particularly like walking.

Once you arrive at Autogara 2, go to the ticket office (Casa de billete), located in the central building, where you can buy tickets to Bran for 13 RON (September 2024). Payment can be made either in cash or by credit card, but I recommend you to have cash with you since cards are not always accepted. Alternatively, you can buy the ticket directly from the driver once you get on the bus, for the same price, but in this case you can only pay in cash. Keep this in mind for the return trip as well.

Once you have purchased your tickets, all you have to do is wait for the bus, which typically stops at stall 2. The company is called "Transbus Codreanu". Keep in mind that the bus leaves approximately every half hour depending on the time of day.

In Bran, the bus stops in the center of the village about 300 meters from the entrance to Bran Castle. Keep in mind the location of the stop because you will need it on your way back.

From Bran to Brașov

To go back to Brașov, just go to the stop where the bus dropped you off on the way there. Your stop is on the opposite side of the road, near a kiosk called "Fast Food & Drinks" that makes Langosi (which I recommend you get while waiting 😂). You can buy tickets directly from the driver (cash only!).

Once you are back in Brașov, you can go back to the center using the same means of transport as you came. The local bus stop is on the opposite side of the street from where it dropped you off on the way there. You can take bus 41 again if you need to get to the center of Brașov.

Taxi/Uber

The most comfortable but most expensive way to get to Bran is definitely Taxi or services like Uber. Keep in mind that a round trip will cost you from 250 to 300 RON.

Organized tour

There are various organized tours that you can book on platforms like GetYourGuide. Typically these tours offer a tour of all the castles in the area and not just Bran.

Tips from Explorer's Tale
If you are leaving from Bucharest, prices are typically low, but from Brașov you won't find much and the prices are much higher. I therefore recommend you choose this option only if you are coming from the capital.

Conclusions

Getting to Bran Castle from Brașov is possible through various more or less economical options. However, it requires a bit of planning, especially with bus schedules and stops that are not always well marked. With the tips provided in this article, you will be ready to organize your trip in the best possible way, enjoying your visit to the legendary Dracula's Castle to the fullest.
