I recommend starting your visit from Valle Faul, where you can leave your car for free. Valle Faul is a green area from which you can admire the Palace of the Popes of Viterbo from below. Among its main attractions is "The Awakening", a monumental sculpture that represents an imposing human figure emerging from the earth. This sculpture, created by John Seward Johnson, symbolizes rebirth and the connection between man and nature.
From Valle Faul, you can take an elevator that will take you directly to Piazza San Lorenzo, where the Palazzo dei Papi is located. The Palazzo dei Papi in Viterbo is an imposing medieval structure that was the residence of the popes during their stay in the city, between 1257 and 1281. This majestic building is known for its Gothic architecture and its elegant courtyard, which houses important works of art and historical frescoes. The Palace is also famous for the Conclave of 1271-1272, during which Pope Gregory X was elected.
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo, located in Piazza San Lorenzo right in front of the Palace of the Popes, is an important Romanesque church that represents one of the main places of worship in the city. Founded in the 9th century and renovated over the centuries, the cathedral is known for its simple and imposing façade, decorated with medieval motifs and a series of columns. Inside, you can admire valuable frescoes and works of art, as well as the precious reliquary of San Lorenzo. The cathedral is also the burial place of numerous bishops and cardinals.
Underground Viterbo (Viterbo Sotterranea), located beneath Piazza della Morte, offers a fascinating journey into the city's past. This intricate labyrinth of tunnels and underground spaces, which dates back to medieval times, reveals the ancient water collection system and defensive structures that once served the city. Walking through its galleries and rooms, you can discover how Viterbo developed and protected itself over the centuries.
Continue walking through the streets of Viterbo until you reach the heart of the medieval quarter of the city. The Quartiere San Pellegrino is one of the jewels of Viterbo. This is one of the best preserved medieval quarters in the world and a lively cultural center, home to numerous art galleries and artisan shops offering unique and handmade products.
The Church of San Giovanni Battista, also known as the Church of the Gonfalone, is an important testimony to the historical and religious heritage of Viterbo. Located in the heart of the historic center, this medieval church is famous for its fascinating Romanesque portal and richly decorated interior. The Church of the Gonfalone is famous for its 14th-century painting depicting the city's banner, a distinctive element that gives it a unique historical and cultural value.
Piazza del Gesù is a charming corner of the city that reflects the local architecture and history. Located near the historic center, it is surrounded by historic buildings and churches, creating a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. After exploring the square and its surroundings, you can enjoy an aperitif in one of the typical bars or cafes in the area.
Piazza del Plebiscito is one of the main squares in Viterbo where the Palazzo dei Priori is located. The square is surrounded by historic buildings and often hosts cultural events and demonstrations. One of the must-see attractions is the terrace of the Municipality, located just outside the square, which offers a view of Valle Faul. To get to the terrace, walk under the Palazzo dei Priori until you find the entrance to the square. You can recognize it because on the edge of the square there is the famous Fountain of Palazzo dei Priori.
Starting from Piazza del Plebiscito, you can reach Corso Italia. Corso Italia is one of the main streets of Viterbo and represents the commercial and social heart of the city. Along the street, you will find a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants, making it an ideal place for a stroll and for shopping.
The Sanctuary of Santa Rosa is an important place of worship dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Santa Rosa da Viterbo. The church, in Baroque style, houses the relic of the saint's body and represents an important point of pilgrimage.
At the end of Corso Italia, you will find yourself in front of the Teatro dell'Unione. The Teatro dell'Unione (Union Theatre) is an important cultural center of the city. Built in the 19th century, the theater hosts a variety of events, including plays, concerts, and cultural events.
Piazza della Rocca is one of the most enchanting squares in Viterbo, ideal for a quiet stroll. Here you can also find the National Etruscan Museum "Rocca Albornoz", which offers a rich collection of Etruscan finds, including funerary urns and art objects that tell the story and culture of the Etruscan people.
In Piazza della Rocca you can also enter the Basilica of San Francesco alla Rocca, which is located in a street to the side of the square.
From Piazza della Rocca, go past Porta Fiorentina and arrive at Prato Giardino. Prato Giardino is a large green space located in the center of Viterbo, ideal for a relaxing break. With its large lawns and centuries-old trees, it offers a quiet and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a walk.
Via Guglielmo Marconi is another of the main streets of Viterbo. The street is known for its lively atmosphere and the presence of numerous restaurants and cafes. From here you can return to Valle Faul, the starting point, but not before visiting the Church of San Giovanni Battista degli Almadiani located in the Piazza dei Caduti. Before descending back to Valle Faul, stop at the panoramic terrace just before the elevator to enjoy a view of the Colle del Duomo di Viterbo.
In short, Viterbo offers a rich variety of experiences, from the historical wonders of the Palazzo dei Papi and the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, to the fascinating underground discoveries and the picturesque medieval quarter. Don't forget to enjoy an aperitivo in Piazza del Gesù and admire the view from the terrace of Piazza del Plebiscito. End your day with some shopping in Corso Italia and a relaxing stroll in Prato Giardino. Viterbo is perfect for a day trip!
