What to do in one day in Vienna: Itinerary with map

Vienna is an elegant and charming city, perfect to explore even in just one day. With the right itinerary, you can discover the heart of the Austrian capital, immersing yourself in its imperial history and its mix of tradition and modernity. I recommend spending a day walking through the historic center and visiting its main monuments. Come with me to discover Vienna! 🌍😊

Visit Stephansplatz and Stephansdom

I recommend starting your visit from Vienna’s main square, Stephansplatz. Stephansplatz is the beating heart of Vienna, a lively square that represents the meeting point between past and present. In the center of this square stands the Stephansdom, the majestic Cathedral of St. Stephen, one of the city's most iconic symbols. With its imposing Gothic façade and colorful glazed tile roof, the Stephansdom is an architectural masterpiece that deserves a visit, both to admire its interior and to enjoy the panoramic view from its south tower.

Tour the historic center of Vienna

Once you have visited the cathedral, I recommend that you get lost in the historic center of the city. Walking through the streets of Vienna is like taking a dive into history and elegance. Among the narrow streets of the city, you will come across the splendid St. Peter's Church, a baroque masterpiece that is absolutely worth a visit.

After admiring the artistic details of the church, take some time to explore the nearby shops, where you can buy the famous "Mozart Balls" (or Mozart-kugeln), filled chocolates that are a sweet symbol of the Austrian tradition. You will find shops that sell them all over Vienna, and one of them is Manner.

Then head to Kohlmarkt, one of the most elegant and luxurious streets in Vienna. Once frequented by the Austrian nobility, today it is a perfect destination for those who love high-class shopping, with boutiques of international brands and prestigious jewelers.

Visit Hofburg and the Sissi Museum

Not far from Café Demel is the Hofburg, Vienna’s majestic imperial palace and symbol of the power of the Habsburgs. During your visit, you can explore the magnificently furnished imperial apartments and learn about the life of the famous Empress Sisi, admiring her personal effects and various historical objects in the Sisi Museum. In addition to providing a fascinating insight into court life, the museum presents the figure of Sisi and her impact on Austrian history.

Consigli di Explorer's Tale
Although it is a must-see in Vienna, take into account the time available. The visit to the palace requires at least 1 hour but between buying the ticket and waiting for the entrance time slot, it could take 2/3 hours. If you do not decide to visit the palace inside, I still recommend you visit the gardens that are located just outside the palace in Heldenplatz.

Stroll through Burggarten

Burggarten is a lovely park located behind the Hofburg, perfect for a relaxing stroll. Here you can admire the Mozart monument and enjoy the beautiful, well-kept gardens, a perfect place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Take advantage of the peaceful atmosphere and shaded paths to take some photos or simply relax.
